Mediaplanet got to chat with Merlin the Mad Ragdoll
(@merlinragdoll) and his owner to discuss the exciting life of a cat influencer.
What is it like having a grumpy superstar in the family?
It has been an unexpected adventure! For Merlin, life is pretty normal aside from the occasional fan meet & greet and the pawparazzi always following him. For me, it has been a really fun, creative outlet that has led me to some unique experiences and opportunities. I would have to say, my favourite part is receiving messages from fans who say Merlin & Ivy content makes their hard days brighter. I feel lucky to be his personal chef, social media manager and administrative assistant who occasionally get’s gifted with his rare and selective affection.
What advice would you give to someone looking to add a furry friend to the family?
It’s really important to consider your lifestyle and choose a pet that fits into it. Do your research on breeds and their needs, visit shelters, and meet potential pets before making a decision. If you already have a pet, consider their temperament and how they might respond to having a new sibling. Certain breeds or temperaments may be a better fit.
When introducing a new pet to your home, start with dedicating a room or small space for them to get comfortable with before exploring the rest of your home. Some cats will be ready sooner than later but you’ll be able to tell by their body language. If their tails are up in the air this means they’re comfortable and might beready to explore but if they are keeping to themselves in a safe spot, they may need more time. Luckily for me Merlin is pretty unphased by almost anything, so introducing Ivy to our space was pretty seamless.
What is the dynamic like between your two pets?
It’s kind of like the classic odd couple. Merlin is the seasoned grump who takes his naps and personal space very seriously. Ivy is the playful little sibling who thrives on chaos and poking the bear—literally. Despite their differences, they have moments of pure sweetness when they think no one is watching. It’s heartwarming and hilarious all at once.
You might be surprised to learn that although Ivy gives off a sweet aura, he is often the alpha when play fighting with Merlin! They happily hang out and play together, and the very odd time I catch them laying closer than 1mm apart – rare but precious.
What advice can you give to pet owners looking to make their pets healthier and improve their happiness?
Always trust your gut! You know your pet, and their tendencies best. If you notice something seems off don’t hesitate from contacting your vet for advice. Even if it turns out to be nothing, the peace of mind is worth it. For example, Merlin constantly begs for treats, so I had some blood work done to rule out thyroid issues. The results came back clear—he’s just a snacky boy like the rest of us!
Beyond that, ensuring they have proper nutrition, their typical vet check ups, a healthy environment and lots of love are key. People often assume since cats are soindependent that they don’t need as much entertainment or can be left alone for long periods of time when that is not the reality. Enrichment is also vital for their mental health so having toys, scratching posts and interactive play available for their stimulation is so important! And don’t underestimate quality time with them whether it’s playing, cuddling or simply being present goes a long way with them.
What are some challenges you’ve gone through as a pet owner?
A few years ago I had quite a scare with Ivy. He had a major UTI where he was hospitalized for a few days and honestly wasn’t sure that he would make it. Since then we have found the best food for his condition and haven’t had any issues since sticking to that. We have also moved a few times over the years so ensuringthey are comfortable in a new space is a process, but as long as I’m nearby I know they feel comforted. Other than that and ensuring Merlin’s royal highness has all of his living standards met, I have had a pretty easy time with them as a pet owner.
Making sure they are healthy and feel loved are my biggest priorities. Truthfully the benefits far outweigh the challenges!
