Mediaplanet spoke with Allegra Shaw, a Toronto-based creator and the co-owner of sustainable fashion line Uncle Studios, about the need for transparency within the fashion industry. Read on for Allegra’s tips on working towards a truly sustainable closet!
Why is sustainable fashion important to you, and what inspired you to create Uncle Studios?
Being conscious about the world should be the standard for all fashion; there really shouldn’t be a separation between fashion and “sustainable fashion”. This industry really isn’t sustainable, but there is a way to do it that takes humans and our environment into consideration. It’s about being conscious about your supply chain and creating pieces that meet your demand without over producing.
We started Uncle Studios on the quest to create the perfect white t shirt. Both Shirin and I were unhappy with what was on the market, feeling like we kept having to re-purchase tee’s after they fell apart in the wash, lost their shape or pilled.
What are your top tips for individuals who are looking to live a more eco-friendly lifestyle?
I think starting small and doing what you can, whether that be buying a reusable water bottle, shopping vintage or finding a conscious brand that you love. Taking it one step at a time and slowly introducing eco conscious decisions into your lifestyle will make it easier and more sustainable for you. Also educate yourself, there are a ton of resources online and really great IG accounts that can help you start living more eco friendly!
What is your favorite sustainable fashion brand, and why?
We’re big fans big fans of Noah. We really like the way they speak about sustainability and they they are educating their consumers. They’re transparent and their clothes are really cool. Veja is great one. They have been so conscious from the very first shoe they made, even before being sustainable was cool and we really respect that. Allbirds is also another shoe brand we’re super into, their supply chain is really clean. And obviously we love Patagonia, the OGs of clean clothing.
