Algoma Country, located in Northern Ontario, offers stunning natural landscapes, plenty of options for adventure, fascinating cultural experiences, and much more.
Stretching from the rugged shore of Lake Superior and Lake Huron north into a landscape of forest, lakes, and rock, Ontario’s Algoma country is truly an adventurer’s playground. And getting here is as easy as a trip over the Sault Ste Marie International Bridge from the USA or following the Trans Canada Hwy 17 from anywhere in Canada.
What is your definition of adventure?
Hike to the edge of the world’s largest freshwater lake or explore along its shore and beyond by motorcycle, car or RV. Discover cliff-top views and natural wonders along pre-planned touring loops. There is no need to rush; pitch a tent or park the RV along a wild beach or at the many provincial parks and campgrounds or settle into a comfortable lodge or lakeside cottage for a few days or more.
Inland, access pristine lakes and rushing rivers by road, train or plane where a fishing experience of a lifetime is guaranteed.
Under the guidance of a local guide, discover the art of fly fishing or land that fish that will live in reminiscing conversations forever.
If your adventure involves the dip of a paddle, you are in luck; lakes and rivers await, be it canoe, kayak or paddleboard.
For the cyclist, you will find hundreds of kilometres of empty roads to explore. If you prefer less travelled roads, aka gravel, there are plenty of those. For the mountain biker, the ever-growing trail networks are some of the best in the province and will make your first visit definitely not your last.
Step into history and follow the path of Canada’s renowned Group of Seven artists and discover the sites that inspired their creations. Retrace the steps of the voyageur or learn the ways of the area’s Indigenous people. Along the way, discover museums, galleries, and the welcoming hospitality of northern communities.
Changing seasons offer new experiences, and as summer is good, fall might be better as you set your adventures against the spectacular colour backdrop of red, orange and yellow.
In the winter, traverse the landscape by snowmobile along the 3000 km of world-class groomed snowmobile trails. Northern Ontario snowmobiling is an experience not to be missed. Imagine spending a day immersed in a winter wonderland and then arriving in a northern Ontario community where snowmobiles outnumber cars in the parking lot, and you are welcomed like a long-time friend even on your first visit.
With an annual snowfall measured in meters, enjoy downhill or cross-country skiing and snowshoeing along some of the best trails in Ontario. Try your hand at ice fishing, backcountry skiing, ice climbing or fat biking along a ribbon of groomed snow.
That said, an adventure does not always have to be so adventurous. Pull up a chair on a sunny patio along a spectacular waterfront and explore some culinary delights and maybe a local craft beer or two. If a good book by a roaring fire or a pampered day at the spa is more your style, Algoma is happy to oblige.
Challenging or relaxing, Algoma has you covered whatever your definition of adventure might be.
