Buying a home can seem overwhelming, but getting informed before you enter the market can make a big difference. Here are four must-do tips from the Real Estate Council of Ontario (RECO):
1. Do your research
Before you hire a salesperson, evaluate them based on their experience, their approach to finding properties that are right for you, the services they’ll provide, and the commissions or fees that you’ll need to pay.
2. Look up your salesperson
Before you start working with a salesperson, visit RECO’s website to confirm that they and their brokerage are registered with RECO and are legally permitted to represent buyers and sellers in Ontario.
3. Read and understand everything you sign
Every real estate contract is different. Never sign a contract you don’t understand. If you’re not sure about something, ask your salesperson for clarification, or ask your lawyer for advice.
4. Be an active participant in the process
Your real estate salesperson is your guide, but you also need to do your part by being involved. Make sure you understand how the process works by asking questions and reading the helpful information on RECO’s website. Think about what’s important to you and communicate that clearly to your salesperson.
